Hi there, a coupla updates:
Teenage Dick, my adaptation of Richard III set in high school, will have a Public Theater/Apothetae reading March 27, directed by Hal Brooks. Then Tiger Style! heads to the Huntington for a reading on Fri April 24th at 7pm. (Boston folks, come at me!) And just announced! The world premiere of Tiger Style! will be at The Alliance in Atlanta, Sept-Oct 2015! ALSO. My wife Rehana Lew Mirza's play Soldier X is now playing in NYC thru April 19th, courtesy of Ma-Yi Theater. Come check it out! My play "Tiger Style!" will have a workshop at Center Theater Group in LA on March 20, directed by Associate Artistic Director Neel Keller. This is an in-house workshop but if you're in town and we're pals hit me up for details.
On a side note, I first met Neel 15 years ago when I was an intern at La Jolla Playhouse, and he was SUPER-NICE to me even though I was nobody, and I remain ever-grateful even today. All of which is to say: big dogs be nice to little dogs, and little dogs keep KEEP at it. After a fabulously-helpful Rough Reading at the Playwrights Foundation in SF, "Teenage Dick" moves on to a Ma-Yi Lab reading in NYC, starring Gregg Mozgala, Shannon DeVido, Julie Fitzpatrick, Alex Breaux, Cleo Gray, and Anna Kull.
"Teenage Dick" a Ma-Yi Lab Reading Wed 2/18/15 @ 7pm 230 West 35th St #203 (betw 7th and 8th Ave) Free! Reservations: info@ma-yitheatre.org Catch my new play "Teenage Dick" in the Bay Area, courtesy of Playwrights Foundation's Rough Reading series.
More info here: http://www.playwrightsfoundation.org/index.php?p=53 There's an interview about the play here: http://playwrightsfoundation.blogspot.com/2015/02/interview-with-playwright-mike-lew.html Check out my "Ten Questions" interview in this month's edition of The Dramatist. If you score a paper copy, Sam Willmott has a profile in the magazine too, in addition to a sneak peek of our upcoming musical Bhangin' It (a collaboration between me, Sam, and Rehana Lew Mirza).
Looking for a strong female monologue? Applause Books has just published an excerpt from Bike America in Best Contemporary Monologues for Women (18-35). PLUS. In February I've got a reading of my new play Teenage Dick (an adaptation of Richard III set in high school) coming up with Playwrights Foundation. If you're in the Bay Area Feb 9 or Feb 10, come check it out! Bike America has just been published by Samuel French and is available for purchase and performance licensing here.
I'm also working on a couple of new projects this fall: Bhangin' It (with Rehana Lew Mirza and composer Samuel Willmott) is a brand-new musical inspired by bhangra, the Punjabi (Sikh) folk dance that has sparked fierce intercollegiate competitions and sick beats sampled by the likes of Jay-Z and Usher. Our musical is about a biracial girl named Mary who gets kicked off her college bhangra team for "not being Indian enough" so she forms a ragtag multicultural dance team of her own. Teenage Dick is an adaptation of Richard III set in high school. A commission from The Apothetae (a company built around illuminating the "Disabled Experience"), this play is currently being test-piloted in the Lark Playwrights' Workshop, where I am a 2014-2015 Featured Writer. Tiger Style! has been named winner of the Pacific/Rim Prize from Kumu Kahua Theater in Hawaii.
1) I have just joined the Dramatists Guild Council, which sets policy and best practices for playwrights and their collaborators on a national scale.
2) Next month I'll be contributing an article to #RightsWeek, a collaboration between Sam French, Howlround, and the Dramatists Guild regarding intellectual property rights in the digital age. 3) My play Tiger Style! is having a workshop at the O'Neill on July 2-3. Casting announced at Playbill... My play "Tiger Style!" will be going to the 50th annual O'Neill National Playwrights Conference this year. Readings will be on July 2 and 3.
