On May 1, my musical Bhangin' It will have a 29-hour workshop with Rhinebeck Writers Retreat. This is the first airing of the musical after 3 years of labor with my co-book writer Rehana Lew Mirza and our composer/lyricist Sam Willmott.
I'm thrilled to announce I've just been named an inaugural recipient of the Lark Venturous Fellowship. I'll be in residence at the Lark over the next two years as I find a production home for my play Teenage Dick.

"Tiger Style" is running at La Jolla Playhouse through Oct 2, 2016.
Check out the San Diego Union-Tribune review, as well as this feature about my return home to San Diego. Meanwhile, "Tiger Style" has begun rehearsals at the Huntington Theatre in Boston and will run thru Nov 13.
As seen in Variety, Teenage Dick will be headed to The O'Neill this summer after its workshop production at The Public.
On 4/24/16, the opening monologue to the play was featured in The New York Times as part of "Shakespeare's Deleted Scenes," a feature marking the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death. Check the artwork from Jason Raish via the NYT! March 24 - April 2
Teenage Dick (vaguely from Richard III) at the Public. Tickets available here: http://publictheater.org/en/Public-Theater-Season/Teenage-Dick/. "A brilliantly hilarious take on Shakespeare’s classic tale of power lust, TEENAGE DICK reimagines the most famous disabled character of all time as a 16-year-old outsider in the deepest winter of his discontent: his junior year at Roseland High. Picked on because of his cerebral palsy (as well as his sometimes creepy Shakespearean way of speaking), Richard is determined to have his revenge and make his name by becoming president of the senior class. But as he manipulates and crushes the obstacles to his electoral success, Richard finds himself faced with a decision he never expected would be his to make: is it better to be loved or feared? Tony-nominee Moritz von Stuelpnagel (Hand to God) directs Mike Lew’s (Tiger Style!) devastatingly funny, sharply written new play about perception, disability and the lengths we’re willing to go to rise above our station in life… and high school." The world premiere of "Tiger Style!" is about to hit the Alliance in Atlanta, where I'm thrilled to be reunited with my longtime collaborator Moritz von Stuelpnagel and a killer cast including Francis Jue, Emily Kuroda, Bobby Labartino, Ruibo Qian, and Jon Norman Schneider.
Here's an article in American Theatre about the play. Below is a photo from our load-in. We're starting up tech so I'll be spending a week in a dark theater going over light and sound cues in minute detail for 12 hours a day. In other words: HOME, glorious HOME. Check us out if you're in Atlanta. The play runs Sep 30 - Oct 18. Just got back from the Dramatists Guild Conference back home in San Diego. Here's what's up for the rest of the summer...
*The kind folks at Florida Studio Theatre are putting me up for a weeklong workshop of my play Teenage Dick. They've also (wisely) advised me to start using the play's subtitle: Teenage Dick (vaguely from Richard III). Stop by and say hi if you're in Sarasota. *Sam Willmott and Rehana Lew Mirza and I are pressing on with creating our musical Bhangin' It. After a whirlwind session at The Orchard Project we're next moving on to Running Deer Musical Theatre Lab in Portland and the Rhinebeck Writers Retreat in upstate NY. Just got back from a hugely productive week at The Orchard Project working on our musical Bhangin' It.
Now if you'd like to see a snippet from Tiger Style! (upcoming world premiere at the Alliance in Atlanta, October 2015) and a couple of other excellent plays, hop on over to Columbia University for the Alliance/Kendeda scene presentations, June 25, 2015. The Huntington will be hosting a reading of "Tiger Style!" directed by my "Bike America" collaborator Moritz von Stuelpnagel. Free reading on Fri April 24th at 7pm. More info here.
